Calvin Harris unexpectedly released a brand new track on Thursday, coming as the most recent installment in a short string of work that features his own vocals. “My Way” tells the story of someone breaking away from a situation that they believed to be a good one, but realizing once out of it that it had only been a hinderance. A clear comparison has been made between this track and Harris’ recently broken off relationship with Taylor Swift, as the descriptions of Harris’ mindset coming away from the relationship align very closely with the song’s lyrics.
In an interview with iHeartRadio, Harris added further weight to the claims, describing the impetus behind releasing such a specific song.
“[The] song’s kind of about breaking out of a situation that you thought was a good thing. Then, you’re way more comfortable out of it. And it could be anything. It could be a job, or it could be a relationship. I had kind of the idea for the concept for a few years, but I didn’t know how to work out how it sounded.”
When asked why he decided to use his own voice rather than one of the celebrity singers from his long catalogue of friends and associates, the Scottish DJ said that the timing simply felt right.
“I like to sing on a song every two or three years, or so. I just kind of thought it was a bit of a curve ball. I kind of like the idea of just tracking something out without a celebrity guest feature, and I think the vocal works, so why not.”
While he’s already said that an album is not his primary focus at the moment, he did mention that his next single will likely feature previous collaborator Big Sean. Unfortunately, “My Way” looks to be the last piece of new music his fans can expect for the rest of the calendar year.
“This [‘My Way’] is probably the last thing I’ll put out this year. I did something with Big Sean for him, which he said might be out this year — which I really hope it is, because I love that. Apart from that, that’s it. One song at a time. That’s my new mantra. Try to make each song as good as it can possibly be. I’m not trying to do an album. I’m just trying to do good music.”
