Google Play has exclusively provided us with their list of the Top 10 U.S. Streamed Songs of the 2016 summer, including three EDM tracks that managed to break through the genre and into the mainstream.
It goes without saying that the The Chainsmokers have founded a growing empire around their soaring melodies and inarguably catchy lyrics. Ever since their powerful performance at this year’s Coachella, the duo have been featured on nearly every respected outlet under the sun and seen wild success on each of their single releases. “Don’t Let Me Down” featuring Daya, the track that’s been in our heads for the duration of the summer, was even streamed the second most times in the U.S. behind Drake’s hit song “One Dance.”
At the No. 5 spot, Calvin Harris‘s collaboration with Rihanna “This Is What You Came For” represents the pop hybrid sector of EDM an entire five positions above Rihanna’s own single, “Work.” The song went platinum in the United States back in July, and has continued to dominate the airwaves and charts ever since.
Finally, Seeb‘s uplifiting remix of Mike Posner’s “I Took A Pill In Ibiza” rounds out EDM’s involvement on the list at the No. 8 position. Gathering exponentially more plays than the original track, Seeb’s remix helped push it to the top 5 of Billboard‘s Hot 100 chart. As the Norwegian duo said themselves: “Nobody knew it would become that big.”
