Point Blank Presents Your EDM School With FTampa

Welcome to Your EDM School, a feature that dives into the world of electronic dance music production. In partnership with Point Blank Music School, Your EDM School is returning weekly, with a variety of installments that will include guest posts from artists offering inside tips, detailed looks into the minds and tools of producers, and tricks of the trade for all you aspiring producers at home.

Hear from your favorite artists and learn about their worlds when they leave the decks and hit the studio. Your EDM and Point Blank’s weekly series is educational for music students and informative for fans.

This week we’re hearing from FTampa, who’s giving five tips to burgeoning producers on how to be successful in their career. FTampa himself is a well-decorated producer who has played at various festivals all over the world including Tomorrowland and EDC Las Vegas. While his tips aren’t as verbose as some of our past guests, they still bear repeating.

1) Listen to the original and make it different.
It is very important that the remix work goes on a different way than the original work.
Make sure the remix is complementary and not competing on same category.

2) Create new melodies

Do not rely on the original leads and riffs. Create new melodies, try new notes and make sure you are giving a new look to the leading synth or vocal.

3) Change the BPM
Try to work on different BPMs. Probably the original songwriter and the record label who are requesting the remix wants diversity and reach new audiences. Changing the BPM is a great way to make sure you are going in completely different direction.

4) Be Unique
This is one of the most difficult ones. Finding a unique sound, that when people listen they know it’s yours. It is a long creative process.

5) Be Creative
Make sure you are open to advises and references. Study a lot the structure of the songs and how the big records are made. However, when you are on studio, remixing the record, forget everything and just be creative.
