Candyland & Shoffy – Faces [Monstercat]

After 6 months of musical silence, Candyland‘s triumphant return has come. Candyland’s first-ever collaboration with American up-and-comer Shoffy – “Faces” – is not one to be ignored. “Faces” follows up to Josie Martin‘s heart-wrenching Facebook post last Thursday, where she described the difficulty of keeping the project going following the departure of long-time Candyland member Ethan Davis. The post – although sad as it was – came with the announcement of two Monstercat releases; “Faces” and an additional unnamed track, to be released in September.

Candyland’s journey with Monstercat began in early 2013 when they were recruited to remix Tristam‘s smasher “Truth,” while they were still a duo. The remix reached enormous heights, even making its way onto the highly successful UKF Dubstep 2013 album. Following Davis’ departure, Candyland was brought back again in late 2015 to remix Pegboard Nerds & Jauz‘s “Get on Up.” The remix was easily one of the hardest of the full EP’s bunch, so I was hyped to hear what would come with Candyland’s true Monstercat debut.

Flavored with R&B vocals and future bass synthesizers, “Faces” is definitely a treat. Its general sound is dark, but with a highly energetic drop that serves to perfectly contrast the track’s feel. While many of Monstercat’s trap releases have a more prominent EDM feel to them, “Faces” feels much more like trap in the classic sense of the word. To top it all off, this thing has an absolutely killer low end. Don’t waste your time by peeping this through earbuds or laptop speakers, put on some quality headphones, press play and enjoy the ride.
