Your EDM Interview: Gianni Marino, Mahesa Utara & MC Yacko

This week sees us speak with Gianni Marino, Mahesa Utara and MC Yacko, all three of which artists have just collaborated together for the bass anthem ‘No Time For Fake.’ Check out how the single was made, and what else we can expect to hear in the coming months.

How did the collaboration for the new single come about?

Gianni: I was in Indonesia and Mahesa showed me the rough idea. I really liked it so we finished it together and Yacko ended up providing a dope vocal for it later.

Mahesa: I can’t remember all the exact details, but doing a collaboration with Gianni is always about spontaneity. We didn’t think much, just do what we feels right at the moment.

Can you tell us a little bit about the recording process for the track?

Gianni: Mahesa recorded all the vocals with Yacko, she is a big rapper in Indonesia and has opened for some big US artists when they performed in Jakarta.

Mahesa: It was a really quick recording session and was easy to capture Yacko’s energy because she has a very distinctive voice.

Yacko: Mahesa showed me a basic beat and I dropped my lyrics. It’s always been fun doing some recording with him, but it’s also unpredictable! I went on my bicycle to the studio at 1am (Mahesa likes bizarre recording times) and recorded the whole thing.

How is it working with Be Rich Records?

Gianni: A really awesome label with some awesome releases coming up other than ours, like from my homies Dirtcaps & Zeskullz and heaps more. They have had some big releases with acts like Peking Duk and are the top label in the southern hemisphere for my kinda music!

Mahesa: As far as I know they are probably one of the most patient and humble labels in the industry. I got signed with them when I was young and was just starting to learn all about the music scene. I didn’t know much about the history and the trends back then, and they helped me a lot in shaping my career as a producer.

You’ve picked up support from Diplo, DJ Snake, What So Not, Yellow Claw, GTA, Wiwek and Astronomar to name a very select few – who are you tipping at the moment?

Gianni: Apart from some homies already getting big in the game like Cesqeaux and Dirtcaps, some artists I have been really admiring the sounds of lately would be Prismo, Popeska, Afreaux and Clevt.

What else do you have coming up in 2016?

Gianni: I have finished a lot of tracks in the first half of the year, some will get released soon and some still need to find a good home. I am also busy working on some really exciting tracks with vocalists which I can’t wait to get out there too, definitely some fresh sounds and vibe for me so I am eager to share it with the world! Some new collabs are in the works with Alvaro, Hasse De Moor and Junkie Kid and I’m also producing on an album for some big rap artists here in The Netherlands who have worked with Yellow Claw, Showtek, Hardwell & W&W… so lots of exciting stuff! 🙂
