I’m not sure what the deal is with this trend of cutesy and cartoony brands in electronic dance music. An emerging artist has been nonchalantly dropping a series of trap and future bass remixes under the moniker Casper who’s look reminds me of an odd fusion between bass house aficionado Ghastly, rising dubstep star Slushii, and trap champ Marshmello at first glance. But beyond the logos and stage name are some tunes that are worth checking out if you love Japanese-inspired, Porter Robinson-esqe music.
Remixing AKBSHI, Casper reimagines the song “Fly” into a groovy bass jam. Keeping the original’s vocals and trap flavor, Casper fills this song with melodic goodness glued with uplifting synths in the first half. The second half morphs into something new entirely by injecting a wild Egyptian-flavored trap drop. In other words, it is similar to what Skrillex was doing in his remix of “Ease My Mind” by Niki & The Dove. In this AKBSHI remix, however, Casper returns back to the future bass noise from the beginning of the song and concludes one of his best releases thus far.
