Super8 & Tab are a celebrated duo in the trance world, and we’ve been working hard with them to try and get this interview and special mix out to our readers. We’re happy to say that it finally worked out, and we could not be more joyous about the results.
According to their biography, “Since their collaboration in 2005, Super8 & Tab have released two Beatport trance number one artist albums, played at major music festivals all over the world, including EDC, Ultra, Tomorrowland and A State of Trance, been nominated ‘Best Breakthrough DJ’ at the Miami WMC IDMA Awards and they consistently score highly in DJ Magazine’s Top 100 poll.”

As veterans of the international electronic music scene, where do you think Super8 & Tab fits amongst the modern/progressive movements?
We have never really thought that much about where our music fits, we just do what feels good when we are working in studio. Helsinki Scorchin’ is good example of that. After First Aid which was a 139BPM club banger, we wanted to do a progressive trance track with an uplifting vibe. At the time 134BPM was considered very slow in the trance world at that time, yet it became a track that really launched our career. We still work in the same way to this day and Mega is an example of our diversity, and knowing we just have just signed a new 138BPM track just underlines that.
In an industry where new genres seem to be popping up left and right- how do you classify your music these days? “Mega” isn’t very trance-like at all.
Our music has always leaned on strong groovy baselines and strong melodies and the same applies to Mega. We have always been interested in bringing elements from other music genres, and there’s a lot of interesting things happening in electronic music right now, so we are trying to bring some of those elements to our music if it fits the formula.
We noticed there’s a pretty cool music video out for “Mega” as well. Anything you can tell us about that?
It’s a pretty cool animated video where we are playing a video game against each other. Who wins? You’ll have to watch it and see.
Is your sound constantly changing due to demand or because you guys intend for it to?
It’s because we like to keep it fresh in the studio and for our fans rather than to just copy / paste everything from an old project. Unfortunately so many talented artists sound the same over and over again. We totally understand it’s good to have some level of continuity, but sometimes it’s just too much. Perhaps we should stick more to one sound, but it wouldn’t be that much fun!
What kind of message are you trying to get out to your fans with your music?
Our last album was called ‘Unified’, and that message is still very valid in the way we think about club music. Lots of dance music is now consumed elsewhere than in clubs, but for us the place for it is still a club or festival and that’s where you can feel being one and unified. For us club music means togetherness and having fun together.
Outside of electronic music, what other artists are you following?
What is not electronic music these days? It feels like everything new in either pop or club or indie is more or less electronic music. But if we’re talking about something not considered as club music we just saw MØ live and she was great. Also Flume is pretty cool too.
Who/which artists have most influenced you? Were people like Armin or Above & Beyond different people when you started out?
Definitely those two were great influences in the beginning of our careers and even today. Especially Above & Beyond, who we have been very close to, and have helped us out on so many levels, its almost impossible to not be strongly influenced by them.
But then there’s so many other artists too. Rollo from Faithless, Eric Prydz, Axwell, Ferry Corsten…the list could go on and on.
Who would you like to collaborate with in the future – why?
Cosmic Gate is probably closest musically to us at the moment and we have become very good friends with Claus and Bossi too so it would be lots of fun.
What festival has been your favorite to play? One that you’d like to play in the future?
EDC Las Vegas is probably the craziest festival we’ve played, but Tomorrowland and Weekend Festival in Finland are good fun too.
