It’s common knowledge that the West Coast as a whole is a hotbed of forward-thinking musical ingenuity, but the Pacific Northwest in particular has truly been impressing us lately. Artists like Chase Manhattan, Pressha, Tom Kha, and many more call this wild stretch of wilderness home, with new music makers and collectives sprouting up like mushrooms after a rainstorm. The scene up there is as fresh as it gets, so we’re especially pleased to introduce you to one of its rising stars: ShermGerm.
Based out of Seattle, he’s been steadily cornering the market on experimental trap and bass music. Case in point: his latest track, ‘Frogger’. Sitting somewhere between musical styles reminiscent of EPROM and Shlump, the tune definitely brings a vibe swampy enough to fit the title. Guttural yet syrupy synths bubble and churn alongside bouncing, 808 kicks and subtle melodies that flit around like flies on a marsh, creating an almost sticky sonic experience. ShermGerm completely nailed this one; and once all of his beat-hustling homies got a hold of it, a buffet of dank remixes was born. Collected together in the freshly released Frogz EP, the album features re-imagined versions of ‘Frogger’ from artists up & down the West Coast and far beyond. Kozmo, Pilz Beats, Chops Junkie, and several others all make appearances, with submissions ranging from groovy, halftime drum & bass to downtempo electro-soul. Best of all, the whole album is available for free; so, you have no excuse not get these tunes into your ear canals.
