Over the weekend, Billboard Music Awards recognized the industry’s best, and the influence of dance music was noticeably present throughout.
While Adele won the overall Top Artist category, Skrillex and Steve James’ work on Purpose helped secure Justin Bieber as the Top Male Artist and Top Social Media Artist, though we’re not quite sure what that means…
We’re left scratching our heads how David Guetta muscled out DJ Snake, Zedd, Major Lazer, and The Chainsmokers to be crowned 2016’s Top Dance/Electronic Artist, but we’re happy to see that Top Dance/Electronic Album went to Zedd for True Colors. Other nominees were David Guetta’s Listen, Major Lazer’s Peace Is The Mission, ODESZA’s In Return, and EDM’s biggest duo Skrillex and Diplo Present Jack Ü.
And of course, Top Dance/Electronic Song went to the inimitable “Lean On” from Major Lazer & DJ Snake Featuring MØ. Other nominees in the category were The Chainsmokers’ “Roses,” DJ Snake & AlunaGeorge’s “You Know You Like It,” David Guetta’s “Hey Mama,” and Jack Ü’s “Where Are Ü Now.”
Also, despite the confusion with Kemosabe Records and Dr. Luke, Kesha was permitted to perform at the awards ceremony alongside Ben Folds, receiving a standing ovation for her first televised performance since 2014.
