Insomniac’s Founder Pasquale Rotella Explains The Business Of EDM

In a CNBC special detailing the business of electronic dance music, Insomniac Founder Pasquale Rotella offered his insight on what drives the raving business. While it all makes perfect sense to those of us involved with the music, to someone who has no idea where EDM grows or if it’s illegal, the entire concept can be rather confusing.

Rotella was quick to explain that there are innumerable genres within the umbrella term of EDM, and the EDC don didn’t hesitate to comment on the growing buzz of house and techno.

When one of the anchors asked “How do we know this isn’t a fad?” Pasquale’s reply was simple: festivals aren’t going anywhere.

“We’re growing every day. Not just in the United States, but we’re growing internationally. Our 20 year anniversary is in 5 weeks in Vegas, and we’re already thinking about the next 10 years. What we’re going to be doing and how we’re going to use technology to enhance the experience – it’s an exciting time for festivals.”

Pasquale also reignited interest in an EDC Japan, stating that there would be an event there next year, after stating in March that this year’s July unveiling had to be postponed.

Pasquale even commented on the importance of artists making good music, validating the scene, and cross-collaborating with other artists outside of dance music… Namely David Guetta with the Black Eyed Peas, even though that already seems like a lifetime ago.

And according to Pasquale, virtual reality is the next technology to be adopted in the festival circuit. Watch the video below, and be on the lookout for the incoming flood EDC New York sets from this weekend.
