Spotify Expands Their Platform With New Video Series

With news that Spotify continues to grow, the company continues to innovate and push their streaming service beyond merely providing streameable songs, albums, and other content. The service added video content back in January, and now are pushing for more original content in the form of a brand new video.

Spotify revealed that they will be releasing 12 videos in the future, tailored toward music and broad entertainment interests. The series includes a documentary series called Landmark that captures important music events; the hip-hop geared mini-series Rush Hour produced by Def Jam Records co-founder Russell Simmons‘ company All Def Digital with an opening episode set during SXSW; and Tim Robbins of The Shawshank Redemption fame produces an as-of-yet unnamed mockumentary series that revolves around finding the next big music star.

The series will come to both premium and regular users in countries such as the U.S. and U.K. on Monday, May 16, and a later phase will include a focus on animated and comedic series. One of the series that will come during the second phase will be Drawn & Recorded, an animated series that is similar to Landmark in that it captures important moments throughout popular music history. Spotify’s new push for video is being spearheaded by Tom Calderone, who left Viacom after a 17-year career to work with Spotify.
