Music Festival Comes to an End Because Co-Founder Hates Hipsters

That’s right, you read that headline correctly. Before you write off that headline as click bait, let’s back up for a second. A music festival by the name of Bloc Weekend in England has attracted thousands of attendees since its start in 2006, but it appears the eleventh anniversary edition of the festival, which was just held March 11 to 13, will be its last.

Bloc Weekend co-founder George Hull announced the festival’s end with an editorial posted on The Spectator, in which he denounced modern rave culture by labeling modern ravers as “too safe and boring,” arguing many festival attendees are now “spineless” hipsters, and repudiating such modern festival fixtures as early bird passes, early closing times due to noise ordinances, and “safe space” policies that protect the well-being of attendees.

With a 2016 billed topped by the likes of Radiohead frontman Thom YorkeFloating PointsFour Tet, and more, Bloc Weekend will be sorely missed. Luckily many dance artists have come out to criticize Hull for his editorial and decision to end the festival, namely Chicago house DJ and producer The Black Madonna and British DJ Ben UFO. Hopefully Bloc Weekend’s end signals the beginning of more exciting events.
