Martin Garrix literally gives no f*cks, and I love it.
But, seriously. Having parted ways with parent label Spinnin’ Records and their accompanying management team, the young Dutch star – excuse me, superstar – has set out on his own with the creation of his own music label, STMPD RCRDS (pronounced “stamped” – I was confused too). With that huge move, Garrix has opened up the potential to produce and release pretty much whatever he wants.
He set out to show that off tonight, in a hugely risky, but potentially hugely rewarding situation: closing main stage Ultra Music Festival on its opening night. Oh, and he is, of course, the youngest DJ to ever do so. That’s something we call making history. The youngster proceeded to debut an astounding 10 new tracks – ten. Ranging from expected explosive progressive vocal hits destined for festival-dom to post-EDM heaven trap anthems that we can only compare to marshmello on steroids. He also unleashed some new dark electro which we had to turn the volume WAY up for, and even some straight up hip/hop hits.
Martin Garrix showed up… big.
That being said, there were a few misses that I won’t hesitate to mention. Garrix had a bit of a hitch in his mix at points where it simply wasn’t as clean as it could be. Garrix’s choice to end on his newest hit “Now That I’ve Found You” featuring John & Michel, without John Martin coming out to perform, felt like a climax that never came. Instant-hit singer and songwriter John Martin last performed at Ultra for the memorable finale of Swedish House Mafia‘s stint as a group, and a return tonight would’ve felt like a true passing of the torch.
That being said, Garrix stepped up in a manner we can only describe as beyond his 19 years. The crowd hung on his every word and new song debut, setting up for a short but stellar 55-minute performance that left us only wanting more. With a debut album on the horizon, which clearly we heard a lot of tonight, and a new label on the rise, it’s evident that the only way is up from here for Martijn.
