Sony Music Reportedly Dropping Dr. Luke

“Dr.” Luke Gottwald, accused of sexually assaulting his client, Kesha, is reportedly going to be dropped from Sony Music.

Amid furious controversy in the music and fan communities, sources have told The Wrap that Sony Music is expected to end their working relationship with Dr. Luke one year ahead of his contract date.

“There is no contest. Kesha has no case in regards to her contract but they can’t afford the Adeles of the world out in the streets calling the label unsupportive,” one individual familiar with upper management’s thinking told TheWrap. “The fact that this hasn’t already been taken care of with Luke is confusing, especially for people in the building.”

The contract still stands, however, for another year, and any dissolution of said contract before its time would be a legitimate breach. Any decision to cut ties with Gottwald would have to be on mutual terms, the terms of which would be up to Sony Music CEO Doug Morris and Sony Entertainment CEO Michael Lynton.

So far, this information has only been exclusively given to The Wrap, though HuffPo and SPIN are also reporting on it. More information as the story develops.

This is very good news for dance music fans hoping for that Zedd & Kesha collaboration. Without being under the heel of her former manager, Kesha would have the freedom to pursue some more daring musical endeavors.
