Your EDM Interview: NCT & Franky Nuts

Just before the monumental release of one of the most promising compilations the drum and bass community has seen before, we at Your EDM have had a moment to sit down with the groundbreaking duo NCT in conjunction with their friend and colleague in bass, Franky Nuts. As it unfolds, we’ve collectively witnessed these artists excel beyond immediate measure. Through countless releases on Liquicity, Monstercat and UKF, these three tremendous artists are showing absolutely no sign of slowing down and continuing to take the bass music scene by force – but would you really prefer it any other way?

Hey all! Stoked to be having a seat with you both. How awesome is it to have such a WEIGHTY release on Viper Recordings?

Ahhh man, it’s so satisfying.. For Franky obviously it’s a great addition to his discography, but for me it’s truly a dream come true to be working with my favourite dnb label out there, and also to be getting feedback on my new work from the legend Futurebound. It’s something I’ve been working towards for years-and now that it’s happening I’m only learning faster and it motivates me more than I’ve ever been.
That being said, it’s clear this will not be our last 🙂

How do you feel about the compilation itself, and what are your top 3 songs from the compilation? (although they’re all bangers!)

We think the compilation is full of producers we look up to and the tracks on it are smashin’! Our top three would be:
1. Cynematic & CityBox – Exhale
Such a brilliant vibe, mixdown, sounddesign.. Just perfect.
2. Dossa & Locuzzed – Bad
3. Trei & Northbase – Hostile Universe

How is it all working together, tell us a bit about the production process- how do you two catch the vibe that eventually produces such open-minded productions?

Well, we are good friends and live in the same city. So basically we see each other about 2-4 days of the week, and we literally train our skill together. Whether we produce together or just chill and talk in depth about music production while analysing tunes from other artists, we push each other to think deeper about it and go further.

Having a friendship like this automatically makes you surf on the same wave, and when that is the case it’s easy to make music together. Sometimes I hear Franky working on something and I’m thinking something needs a change and I feel very strongly about it in particular, a bassline groove for instance, then without having to say anything a minute later Frank does exactly that. Kinda creepy.
So basically I think that is the most important thing in a collaboration, making sure you’re on the same page.

What are some locations you’d like to travel to, and perform at?

Jeroen: I’d love to just travel the entire globe, solely with my laptop and write an album while doing some shows here and there. That’s a big dream of mine. But specifically I’d really like to play in Australia, New Zealand and the US.

Frank: It’s almost the same for me, I love to travel and it’s also very inspiring to make music on the road.
I would love to do some shows in the US, Australia etc.
But it could be anywhere really, the most important thing is to meet some cool people and artists who inspire you and maybe work on some crazy collabs !

What’s all in store for you guys for 2016? Any hints as to what the fans can expect?

Frank: I had my first release on ‘Never Say Die’ in January, in 1 day we have the ‘Viper’ release, I’m aiming my ‘Subway Music’ EP for April with ‘UZZI’ from Greece and I’m working hard on getting the next ones sorted!

Jeroen: I’ve worked hard to broaden my sound in the past year instead of sticking to what I know. This allows me to make a much larger variety of music, which I’ve always wanted.
So people can expect liquid, dance-floor, heavy stuff.. Anything basically, who knows, maybe even some different genres 😉

Lastly, anything else you’d like to add to the fans over at Your EDM?

Be yourself in life, find what you love, train/develop that and you’ll be alright.

Absolute legends, all of them. It’s very rare that I come across a tune that immediately makes me chuck my shoe at my entirely innocent roommates. Needless to say, when I heard this collaboration… you may as well have bought me an entire new wardrobe- as i’d imagine I have a neighbor somewhere with some really average apparel in their back yard. From the mixdown to the drop, this tune is the word “banger” personified. I have nothing but respect for these guys, and i’m confident that they will be the next masterful bunch to stand tall at the forefront of the drum and bass scene. Cheers.

As for the release, luckily for you all, it’s available for purchase on February 26th here: http://smarturl.it/sodnb2016
