The U.S. Government Is Hiring A Burning Man(ager)

As evidenced by Quiznos’ exquisite spoof, the integrity of Burning Man is suffering from its growing popularity. But that’s nothing compared to what the U.S. Government is trying to do. The U.S. Department of the Interior’s Bureau of Land Management is currently hiring a Burning Man Project Manager. No, seriously, check out the USAJOBS listing.

Think about the name for a second, it’s a gathering of 70,000 people who are coming together to literally burn the man, AKA the government. And now “the man” is hopping in to oversee the whole ordeal? Of course the event has coordinated with officials to ensure it’s carried out properly, but it’s painfully ironic that the Bureau of Land Management is appointing someone whose primary job description is to help manage and protect the Playa.

The job pays between $70,000 to $90,000 a year, and requires a varied work environment “from an office setting where the incumbent is in contact with work associates, to a field setting where the incumbent is working alone, in a group, in extremely remote and adverse situations.” However, ask anyone who’s taken part in Black Rock City and they’ll tell you that the “adverse situations” are the most endearing part of it. The applications close February 8th, and applicants must prove sufficient specialized experience to manage such a large undertaking. We just hope a Burner gets it…
