So, we’re still waiting for Flume to come through with that sophomore album, but in the meantime, here’s another track from Skin. Titled “Smoke And Retribution,” it features Vince Staples and Kučka on vocal duty, and its tone straddles the jagged edge between an incensed retort and a dreamlike walkabout.
Immediately, we’re met met with contorted blips, conjuring visuals of pixels struggling to escape from a pressurized cage, streaming over a cliff into a valley of sorrowful melodies. Dollops of bass and a boxy kick to usher them along to a trademark gated synth, and minimal percussion thickens the emotional atmosphere. It’s a great track, and all it’s doing is make us want Skin even more. In the meantime, the Australian producer has just announced he’ll be headlining a Red Rocks show on August 18th in addition to a slew of other performances over summer to satiate your fix.
Premiered on Zane Lowe’s Beats 1 radio show, Flume says, “I actually started this beat in the back of a van on the way to Vegas last year. It wasn’t originally intended to have rap on it.”
