Reddit’s dedicated trap music subreddit, r/trap, has just come out with its users’ top picks from our previous year. From larger categories like Best Remix and Best Artist to less frequented classes such as Best Live Performer and Best Mix, the group’s chosen acts are – in this writer’s opinion – more or less spot on throughout the list.
Leading the charge with Best Original Track is none other than NGHTMRE‘s “Street.” The song was first played out in March of 2015 at Skrillex’s headlining Ultra set, and has since become one of the bass scene’s staples. The runner up for this category was Baauer‘s “GoGo!,” which amassed 19% of r/trap’s votes. NGHTMRE also won the group’s overall Best Artist category, with Mr. Carmack thankfully coming in second.
The year’s Best Collaboration was awarded to Skrillex and rapper The Game‘s “El Chapo.” Although the track originally received mixed reviews, the last couple of months have seen it flipped and twisted into epic remixes of all types. Interestingly, “El Chapo” only won this category by two votes, with Flosstradamus, GTA, and Lil Jon‘s “Prison Riot” coming close behind.
Best Remix of the year went to RL Grime‘s flip of TNGHT‘s “Acrylics,” arguably one of my own most listened to tracks of the season as well. Vincent‘s (formally XVII) remix of Alison Wonderland‘s “U Don’t Know” made it to second place with only 12 fewer votes.
R/trap also decided overwhelmingly to vote RL Grime’s Halloween Mix as the best of the year, with Mr. Carmack’s “Queen of Hearts” mix coming in second. RL Grime cleared out the Best Live Performer section as well with well over 100 votes in the lead above his runner up, Jack Ü.
Finally, r/trap elected 2015’s Best LP as Jack Ü’s Skrillex and Diplo Presents. As one of the most influential and talked about records of the year, it’s easy to see why it received over 200 votes more than Rustie’s EVENIFYOUDONTBELIEVE. The Best EP was voted as What So Not‘s recent Gemini EP, with Mura Masa’s Someday Somewhere coming in second.
Overall, a fantastic selection from our friends over at r/trap. Despite there being far too many trap contributors to to give everyone a fair mention, I think these users accurately represented much of the best and most memorable works and artists of 2015.
