5 Things You Might Not Have Known About Kygo

Kygo was one of 2015’s biggest artists, that much is not up for debate. He was named Spotify’s “Breakout Artist of the Year,” as well as becoming the fastest artist to reach one billion streams on the same platform. But for all of the publicity that he received over the course of last year, there’s a lot that we still don’t know about the Norwegian producer.

For instance, did you know that the name Kygo is based on his real life name, Kyrre Gørvell-Dahll? (Hint: take the first two letters of his first and last name.) Here are 5 more things you might not have known about Kygo.

Kygo began studying piano at the age of six, and was composing his own music by 16.

Kygo studied economics at Edinburgh’s Heriot-Watt University in Scotland when he decided to drop out and create music full-time.

Kygo is the definition of a bedroom producer: he learned to create electronic music by watching hundreds of tutorials on YouTube. He was inspired by Avicii’s “Seek Bromance” in 2010.

In 2014, Kygo replaced Avicii on the main stage of TomorrowWorld, after Avicii cancelled due to health concerns.

If music didn’t work out as a career, Kygo wanted to be a football player. “When I grew up I wanted to be a football-player,” he says. “I spent a lot of time playing and practicing football, but as a teenager my passion for music started to evolve and I started to spend more time playing the piano and listening to music.”

Kygo plays the biggest show of his career later this month at the Barclays Center in New York City.
