Tchami is setting out to make a huge impact on the EDM scene in 2016. First he unveiled his new label, Confession, which has since dropped three free originals and made quite the impact on the house scene in the process. The Parisian didn’t stop there, however.
Fresh off of that success, Tchami has made the decision to drop his After Life EP as an early Christmas present, and we couldn’t be more grateful. Stream it below and check out the review while you listen.
It begins with the title track, and quite possibly his most famous release, “After Life.” The 5 minute future house anthem features everything we love about Tchami.
Grimy bass-line? Check.
Unparalleled percussion-infused groove? Check.
Gorgeous vocal top-line? Check.
From there, Tchami takes a dive into some grittier club tunes which are absolute terrors on the dance floor – although not the best listeners. His only true solo effort on the EP, entitled “Superlativ,” is the perfect example. Featuring tastefully repetitive vocal chops and a dubstep-infused drop built upon a 4-on-the-floor house beat, you won’t find me listening to this come Sunday morning’s hangover; but you will find me tearing it up on the dance floor to it the night before.
My favorite addition to the EP has to be his collab with Illangelo and Chuck Ellis, “Alone.” The laidback closer to the 5-track release which puts on display a distinct R&B meets deep house vibe is a very different look from Tchami, and considering the production quality and exceptional songwriting, a look we hope to see again soon in the future.
Overall, this EP is a well produced and cohesive project that provides an enjoyable listening experience from inception to close. Although a few of these tracks missed the mark for me sitting here at my desk, it provides a nice balance that will translate well to a live experience.
