The final day of the Mad Decent Boat Party’s return voyage ended today with its arrival at the Port of Miami. Federal agents met the ship at the dock, the Sun Sentinel reported, to begin their own investigations into the reports of 24-year-old Kaylyn Rose Sommer’s intentional jump off the Norwegian Pearl cruise ship around 7 p.m. Thursday night.
Officials from the Norwegian Cruise Line issued a statement, saying that they had “immediately initiated rescue measures, including deploying three rescue boats and notifying the Coast Guard and other relevant authorities.”
Today, nearly 72 hours later and after the US Coast Guard has officially announced the suspension of the search and rescue operations, she remains unfound.
This incident comes as the second report of a passenger overboard in the last week, with 31-year-old Bernardo Elbaz falling off the Royal Caribbean ship Oasis of the Seas near the Turks and Caicos on November 6. Elbaz was never found.
Sommer has left behind a six-year-old daughter, Rylee. WFOR-Ch. 4 reported that her father, Michael Sommer, told her that her mother was lost at sea.
Mad Decent organizers released their own statement Friday:
“We are deeply saddened by the news that one of our guests on our current cruise went overboard on [Thursday]. Our hearts go out to the family and all involved in this incident, and we will continue to support those affected during this difficult time.”
