Trance Throwbacks: Ferry Corsten & Armin van Buuren – Brute [Video]

The newest installment of the Trance Throwbacks series comes courtesy of two industry legends, Ferry Corsten and Armin van Buuren. While “Brute” is only a handful of years old (released in 2011), it marks an important shift in the ‘trance’ sound.

In the older days, one might have expected an old-school styled anthem from a collab between Armin and Ferry. However, the duo were on the forefront of trance’s evolution, penning a massive bass-heavy tune that still retained the melodic elements desired by the older trance fans. “Brute” is a precursor to some of the more aggresive trance anthems like “Thunder” while simultaneously keeping one foot planted firmly in its trance roots; it’s the perfect example of the ‘right’ way to incorporate pounding bass lines into a track. While a fair amount of today’s releases feature overly simplified kicks as the main melody, “Brute” includes a high-energy kick with beautiful chords layered on top, rounding the mix off in a manner that fits both the new and old sounds of trance.
