You know that feeling you get when you hear something ridiculous fresh for the first time? That feeling of hairs standing up on the back of your neck, goosebumps on your arms, eyes dilated, tunnel vision, complete focus… Clerks & Dark Dred elicit that and more with their newest collaboration called “Kitsune.”
On the surface, this is a trap tune. Dig deeper, and it reveals itself to be so, so much more. The dark and foreboding vocal samples conjure up an image of a heavy techno heater, surrounded on all sides by lighter 808s. The choir samples are the perfect juxtaposition to the darkness, lifting it up and giving it an excellent balance. The strings serve the same purpose, next to the ball crushing bassline. I can only say so much hearing it on a pair of studio speakers, but in the club, this is the type of track that makes you stop dancing and wonder if you’re still alive.
I’m gonna say fuck it and call this “dark trap” because I want more of it. A lot more.
