If there’s one thing that I like in my bass music, it’s a twinge of metal. Both genres are made for tearout sounds and unholy levels of volume. In combination, they have created some of the greatest tracks around, in my own opinion.
When Dirtyphonics released their track “Power Now” with Matt Rose late last year, I was beyond ecstatic. I don’t really think there’s an emotion that perfectly demonstrated my incredible joy. The blend of metal and bass music was just about everything I wanted and I was happy to have it.
Now, with the impending release of the Write Your Future Remixes EP, I have the immense pleasure once again to premiere the FuntCase remix to “Power Now.” The guitars in the intro are slowed down for maximum suspense, dragging you in like quicksand, only to have the ground beneath you cleave and separate. Typical EDM listeners might find this off-putting, but if you’re like me, this hits the sweet spot that you’ve been yearning for for years. And the second drop… oh, man.
The best part is, I can totally imagine Funtcase making angry claws to this tune when he drops it live.
Also on the remix EP is a remix of “Free Fall” featuring 12th Planet by none other than High Maintenance, and if there’s one thing I love as much as metal, it’s drum & bass. This UK DnB producer has been one of my favorites since his Watching Me EP in 2013, though I went back a year or two after I discovered him.
His interpretation of Dirtyphonics leaves nothing to the imagination, going full throttle right out of the gate and making full use of Julie Hardy’s infectious vocals. Heavy wobbles are completely replaced with melodic pads and sweeping synths, and damn-near perfect percussion. Even though liquid has its stereotype as a chill and melodic version of its harder cousin, it can still manage to go hard as fuck with the right person manning the reigns.
