The celebrity DJ trend sets a dangerous precedent for the future of the art form, but several of these DJs really did perform at clubs and festivals years before the EDM renaissance. Case in point: Ruby Rose, the Australian actress/DJ who’s career-defining role on the Netflix hit series Orange is the New Black has catapulted her into the spotlight. Since becoming a household name, Rose’s DJing has hit a new peak: she’s signed with Avicii‘s team, announced an extensive tour, and opened for the likes of Zedd and Martin Garrix.
Despite her success, many critics expressed their belief that Rose only recently learned how to DJ, and lumped her in with the other infamous celebrity DJs (not naming any names…). To repudiate the haters, Rose posted on her Facebook page with a collage of pictures capturing her early days as a DJ. With the post came a lengthy breakdown, with Rose stating that she started DJing in 2009, played festivals with the likes of Skrillex, Calvin Harris, and Erick Morillo, and opened for pop stars Nicki Minaj and Jessie J. While she says she’s not proud of all her past song choices or activities on stage, Rose argues that her success as a DJ resulted from hard work and perseverance.
