San Diego native Coastal is a shining example of the younger generation’s mark on the production world. At only 18 years old, he’s already found his true musical voice and joined the Ethereal Collective roster, headlining their most recent compilation. A deadly mixture of downtempo future bass, trap, and hip hop permeate his wide catalogue of work, expertly treading the line between soulful melodies and jarring rhythms. His latest track is a remix of Major Lazer‘s “Aerosol Can“. Despite the many existing reworks of the track, Coastal presents an entirely unique outlook, using a rumbling sub bass and explosive synth patterns. It’s currently up for free download here.
It begins with the steadily approaching vocals from the original along with deep swells of brass and organs. A series of claps bring us quickly into the break, featuring a satisfyingly overwhelming kick drum and shakers. The thrown and pitched vocals continue throughout the length of the drop accompanied by an arpeggiated sting of synth. After a short fade, the beat is brought back with gusto. Dry horns cut through the reverb and drive the rhythm forward. The last drop brings an unexpected tidal wave of layered synth, heavily sidechained and wide. The progression of the track maintains the listener’s interest until the very end.
