Jacob Plant – Hunger [Dim Mak]

I first heard Jacob Plant back in 2011, when he released his epic remix of Tinie Tempah’s “Wonderman.” It’s not exactly the sound you’d expect from modern-day Jacob Plant, but that track has a special place in my heart. Since then, he’s shifted more towards the house side of things, dropping heavy-hitting tunes that get the masses dancing. His newest work, called “Hunger,” comes from Dim Mak Records, and it’s a head-bobbing banger that expertly delivers groovy future house vibes.

The song starts off with a deep-voiced sample over a simple kick and clap pattern. Classic house bass-stabs enter the mix, establishing a future/deep house vibe from the get go. The drop utilizes the same stabs, creating more complex rhythms from these sounds. While there aren’t many different elements to “Hunger,” it ends up ‘working’ overall. Your average house tune is going to be repetitive, it’s just the nature of the genre. However, when done correctly, it’s a feature that can be used to one’s advantage. Jacob Plant’s production maintains interest throughout, ensuring the repetitiveness isn’t a negative aspect.
