Steve Aoki Explains How He Got Away With Playing ‘Titanic’ At Tomorrowland

“I’m a huge target to loads of people but I just don’t give a fuck anymore. I’m having fun and I’m just going to keep on having fun. I don’t care if I ruffle a few feathers,” says Steve Aoki.

At this year’s Tomorrowland, Aoki decided to switch things up a bit and get the crowd involved with a rendition of Celine Dion’s Titanic theme, ‘My Heart Will Go On’. The crowd ate it up and embraced the hilarity of the situation, calling upon nostalgia and, likely, exhaustion to make it through the spectacle.

Large displays of togetherness are important at massive festivals like Tomorrowland, and in electronic music in general, and this is definitely one of the most iconic songs of all time, so … why not?

“I’ve wanted to work with that track and vocal for a very long time but I’ve always been ‘no no no’ I can’t do it. It’s incredibly cheesy but incredibly epic at the same time, so if you can harness both of those things, it’s going to work.

We all had to completely own it at that moment and just put our arms out and do the Titanic together and let the music take [us]. Everyone was singing along and laughing at themselves at the same time. It was an incredible feeling. I just stood there with my arms out and reveled in the vulnerability of it.”

Steve Aoki celebrates in London today as he becomes the first electronic producer to donate to the Hard Rock memorabilia collection. “Steve Aoki’s donated personal items include Pioneer CDJs, a DJ Mixer, Synth, Keyboard, tour banners, hoodies and t-shirts.”

Steve Aoki commented, ‘I’m honoured to be donating personal items to Hard Rock’s world-famous collection, and it’s so exciting to be celebrating this milestone at Hard Rock Cafe London, Hard Rock’s first-ever cafe. Hard Rock is an iconic brand with a philanthropic vision that mirrors my own; I’m so grateful for the opportunity to raise additional funds for our Steve Aoki Charitable Fund, which will help so many people around the world with global relief efforts.’
