I think it’s safe to say that we were all a bit skeptical, hesitant at best, when we heard that a local theater was putting on an independent musical called Deadmouse: The Musical.
I think it’s safe to say that Joel and his legal team were well within their rights and in a right state of mind when they issued a Cease & Desist to the musical team in Toronto. After all, an artist’s image is very closely tied in with their on-stage persona these days. The team behind the musical responded to the legal threat by specifying that the production was a parody and added the following “About” message at the top of their website:
Just so there’s no confusion Deadmouse the Musical is not written by Deadmau5 or endorsed by Deadmau5. It is a parody. It was written out of love of house music culture.
Following the aforementioned edit, deadmau5 and his lawyers decided to retract their Cease & Desist, letting the musical perform as planned.
Thus it would seem that the musical went off without a hitch this past weekend, and a member of online community Toronto Rave Community was there to see it in all its glory.
The actors were apparently splendid in their roles, injecting the right amount of humor and sincerity into their characters, including Avicheese and David Gouda.
This 60-minute performance tells the tale of Joel Zimmermouse, whose lifelong dream is to be a house music DJ, but is discriminated against for being a mouse. His talent is undeniable, but ultimately the humans are too specist (the species equivalent of racist, in case you were wondering) to give him his fair chance. In order for him to realize his dreams, he is confronted with choices along the way, ones that will challenge his identity, his passion for music, and his heart’s desire. Would the real deadmau5 let a fine piece of “tail” get in the way of his dreams? I have a hunch, but who really knows?
