We’ve all read the tragic headlines regarding deaths at music festivals. It’s a horrific byproduct of the lifestyle we know and love, but festival-goers tend to forget about our basic means for survival when it comes to overpowering music and inordinate drug usage. The media loves to further the stereotypes surrounding ravers in particular, so it’s nice to see a campaign promoting the original, fundamental values of EDM culture.
Featuring DJs such as Martin Garrix, Laidback Luke, Afrojack, and Oliver Heldens, Insomniac has sparked the #WeAreWideAwake movement to remind us that EDM is all about being a good samaritan. Along with this ethical message, they provide great guidance, reminding us to help someone out if something doesn’t look right, and to never be afraid to call for medical assistance. This is honestly the best advice out there, as ravers generally tend to be afraid of getting in trouble, or getting their friends arrested if they’ve taken any drugs.
Robert and Linell Shapiro, of the Brent Shapiro Foundation for Drug and Alcohol Awareness, are perfect examples of the absolute necessity to call for help. In the video above, they explain how their son, Brent, passed away due to drug overdose at a music festival. If one of his friends or a nearby reveler had spoken up when he started displaying negative side effects from the ecstacy and alcohol that he had consumed, he may still be alive today. 
Remember, friends… party responsibly and always help those in need.
