Your EDM Exclusive Interview with Modestep: On Their New Album & Crafting The Perfect Live Show

What does the name of the album actually represent, London Road?

J: It’s actually the road that we were born on, and lived for most of our childhood. But it also represents the fact that there’s about 350 “London Roads”, all spread around the UK. So it’s kind of like an encompassing sound. And also “London” in the title and it’s very British sounding.

T: I think of it maybe as even a road into London for some people; you know you can kind of get that vibe. It might be a lot of people’s first road into London, and this is sort of our perception of what it is.

J: Our “London Road.”

You’ve got a lot of different sounds on this; you’ve got grime, drum & bass, dubstep, electro. And then you’ve got your track with Partysquad with moombah. Was there any thought at all to how you wanted to direct the sound, or was a lot of it just organically developed?

J: We knew exactly what we wanted it to sound like.

T: The thing is, when you’ve toured for so long, you know what you want a song to do to people, what journey you want to take them on.

So a lot of it was inspired by the live act?

J: 100%.

T: All of it was. When we finished touring, we were like, “Oh shit, okay, now we know exactly what to do and in what time and in what place.” On our last UK tour we played, I’d say, 60% new material that nobody had heard and it went off.

J: That’s when you know you’ve written the right material, is because these people are going fucking psycho to music they’ve never even heard before. And that was the best thing ever to see that happen.

T: Up until that point, we would play our own stuff that was necessarily a “main tune” of ours and nobody would know it. So just for people to respond that way was fucking sick.

That’s really all the questions I have. Anything you guys just want to riff on?

J: Buy our album please……..

[laughs] Yeah, I’m glad your album hasn’t leaked yet. Zedd’s just did a couple days ago.

T: Well we’ve still got a couple of weeks to go, we’ve got time.

J: It’s nearly happened.

T: I know people who have it, who shouldn’t have it. A few were internet kids who have it… and have shit that I don’t even have. It’s so creepy. This guy hit me up on Skype and said, “I’ve got your album. I’ve got all of these tunes.” He said he had a tune that we made with Kano which was really old.

J: I don’t even have a copy. I lost it.

T: He had a song that we made in 2009, 2010, that we sent to nobody and he has it.

J: Apart from labels ……………. that’s how he’s got it! We sent it around to labels. He must know someone who works for the labels.

T: We never sent the Kano tune though, that’s the part that gets me. Sorry about that, it’s just been confusing us so much. We would ask these kids on Skype, “Where did you get this!?”

J: Quite frankly, if it did leak now, I wouldn’t even care. I’m just at the point where I want everyone to hear the record.

Will there be a remix album?

J: Funny you should ask.

T: This is a bit of an exclusive, but there will be a remix album dropping shortly after.

J: You’re not even fucking ready for the remixes. I can’t say…

T: You can say a few. Yeah… give him one. Give him the “Damien” one.

J: The opening track on our album is “Damien” featuring Funtcase, and we’ve got a Cookie Monsta remix of that, which is … you can imagine: Funtcase x Cookie Monsta x Modestep. It’s unbelievable. But there will be a full album of remixes that are equally as good as that. We’ve only gone to people that we fucking love, and people that we couldn’t necessarily work out getting something on the album together.

T: We’re stoked on it. And hopefully it’ll give it something later in the year to revive the hype a bit.

London Road by Modestep is out May 25th. Pre-order it here.
