Last night’s Billboard Music Awards provided a lot of stories – from Kanye and the Kardashians, to Guetta and Minaj, but the real stars of the night were the winners of the awards. Three categories stood out to us, in particular.

- TOP DANCE/ELECTRONIC ALBUM
- TOP DANCE/ELECTRONIC SONG
Competition was fierce in each of these categories. The winners will likely be divisive, and it’s guaranteed 100% that not everyone will agree with the results.
Beating out Clean Bandit, Avicii, Disclosure, and Lindsey Stirling, Calvin Harris took home the award for Top Dance/Electronic Artist for the night. 
However, despite winning for Top Artist, he lost out in the Top Album category. Beating out Avicii, True, Disclosure, Settle, Calvin Harris, Motion, and Skrillex, Recess, Lindsey Stirling walked home with the Top Album nod for Shatter Me.
Finally, beating out Clean Bandit feat. Jess Glynne, “Rather Be”, Disclosure feat. Sam Smith, “Latch”, Ariana Grande feat. Zedd, “Break Free”, and Calvin Harris, “Summer”, DJ Snake & Lil Jon won for their seminal track “Turn Down For What.” Despite its clear club appeal and lack of true musicality, the party tune shattered records last year and was a clear choice for the win.
The BBMAs were slightly criticized by the dance community for lumping in various albums that have been out since early 2013 (Settle) with fresher albums from late last year (Motion), the same with certain songs. The Billboard Music Awards use a March – February calendar to track nominees, different from their January – December calendar year which Billboard uses to determine its own year-end charts.
Next year will likely see more nominees from 2013 than 2015, but hey, don’t let an awards show tell you what you like. It’s all just for fun, anyway.
