Here we go again…
For the second year in a row, Mad Decent Block Party has banned kandi. And for the second year in a row, it really shouldn’t matter.
If you were on social media around this time last year, you were no doubt witness to the myriad articles, outbursts, and nigh on protests that resulted from the now infamous “Kandi Ban of 2014.” The dance music community’s obsession with beads was cut short when Diplo and Mad Decent announced that kandi would be restricted from their run of Block Party shows last year. People didn’t take him seriously, and the result was kandi littered about the entrance of these venues.
This year is essentially the same – no kandi allowed. And here’s why you shouldn’t care: because you’re not there for the kandi. Excuse me if I come off a little opinionated, but there are other ways to show solidarity in dance music without trading bracelets and masks. Furthermore, the music that Diplo and his team are providing are top-notch, worthy of your full attention. I understand that trading kandi isn’t some 10-minute endeavor, but at the same time, I don’t want some kandi-armed raver throwing their arms up in the air with 10 pounds of hard plastic near my head.
No one is forcing you to go to these shows. I guarantee you that these artists will be back in your area again sometime this year. If you don’t agree with MDBP’s policy, then just don’t go.
