GRiZ – For The Love (feat. Talib Kweli)

Madeon and The Prodigy aren’t the only ones coming out with albums at the end of the month. GRiZ has been teasing his own album, Say It Loud, for the past month as it finally approaches release on the 31st. Single have been slung and invite-only listening parties have been thrown, but we’re still not there quite yet.

The final (we think) single from the album coming out is “For The Love,” a collaboration with Talib Kweli. This is a downtempo funk track for the ages, I’m telling you right now. At first listen, I would have assumed that this track would be at the end of the album as a sort of way to wind down from the majestic funk that you would have just experienced, but no. “For The Love” is Track #7/11. I would venture to assume that it serves, then, as a sort of intermission between halves of the work. Then again, none of this applies to how good the track really is anyway.

It’s got an old-timey sound, with a fairly clear gramaphone effect overlaid on top; add in the brass, Kweli’s voice, and the smooth and sultry bassline and this track is essentially a modern-day jazz/blues tune. The rhythm contains elements of funk that GRiZ is known for, making this track a wild amalgamation of decades of musical styles.

Listen to the whole track below, and visit here for tickets for GRiZ’s tour.
