Superstar DJs have essentially become like celebrities to the EDM world – driving fast cars, getting involved with actresses/actors who are followed by the likes of TMZ or E!, generally being in the spotlight 24/7. It’s absolutely counter-intuitive to how this industry started out, acting as a counter culture for those who didn’t fit in. Now we have these multimillion dollar DJs and we’re back to square one. Still, it’s not like this is a well-kept secret. We’ve allowed these individuals to become this way by putting them on a pedestal and bowing down before their anthemic, major-summer-festival sets while they rake in hundreds of thousands of dollars per gig.
However, new act Lace Up take an extremely pointed jab at the superstar DJs of today in their new video for their single, “Body Shake.” Appearances by David Guetta, Afrojack, Avicii, Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike parody their various social media and IRL gaffes such as the “Guetta Face” or Afrojack running his Ferrari off the road. It doesn’t stop there, though, as Calvin Harris, Carl Cox, Carnage and more get their faces put on display in seemingly comical ways. Paris Hilton gets jabbed at repeatedly, though in a repeated way, with references of her “going to France.” (I honestly don’t know why that’s funny…) Oliver Heldens does get eaten by a gecko, however, which is pretty funny.
All of the pop culture aside, the track actually isn’t that good. I feel like the Lace Up duo, a “WORLDWIDE” pair of women with a unplaceable European accent, used the “funny” video to promote their track in the hopes that people wouldn’t notice. It’s a pretty damn basic 4-on-the-floor beat with bounce and big room influences, nothing that hasn’t been done before. I could say “Ha ha, that was neat” and move on with my day. But if these women want to actually have a career in dance music, I would suggest staying away from silly tropes and videos and actually work on their skills as producers. We’ve already seen a career launch as a result of a parody video with Sam F as Davincii, I really don’t think it needs to happen again.
Their Soundcloud is 4 days old, their Facebook is nigh-on impossible to find unless you dig through all their social media first, and Twitter presence is basically non-existent. I’m not sure why we’re reporting on this to be honest except to keep others from doing something like this ever again.
