You can’t deny that the term “Deep House” has sullied up the interpretation of the genre. Depending on who you ask, a bevy of artists are producing deep house, from Oliver Heldens to Dusky and beyond. When I interviewed Beckwith earlier this year, he wasn’t fond of the changes in the genre, as he classifies himself with the classic Chicago and New York House Underground movements from decades ago. These sentiments are apparent in his latest EP, a 2-track affair designed for those who miss classic house music.
“The Words I Got” and “Lil Bit” feature the raw vocal talent of Mark Borgazzi, a raspy tenor that help keep those warehouse vibes alive. Let it be known, Beckwith does not make bottle service house music; these are tracks for gritty basements, hole-in-the-wall clubs and the DJs who love to play them. Both tracks also include his signature sound: deep, rich baselines and distorted synths to keep you grooving late. It’s another fine showing for Beckwith, who continues his crusade against commercialized, carbon-copy house music.
