‘Tomorrowland’ Gets A Trailer, Moves Forward Despite Trademark Infringement

A few months ago news broke about a new movie in production featuring George Clooney and Hugh Laurie. The movie, titled Tomorrowland, is set to be a science fiction movie based sometime in the future. The problem? The trademark on the word “Tomorrowland” is still partially owned by ID&T.

ID&T holds the rights to Tomorrowland in Belgium, Luxembourg and the Netherlands, thus blocking Disney from releasing the movie in these three respective countries. ID&T will be facing an interesting legal landscape as the movie is expected to hit theaters in the UK by May 22nd.

Sharon Daboul, a respected trademark attorney, further explained the situation to the Belfast Telegraph:

“Disney has a trademark registration in the USA for the term Tomorrowland, dating back to 1970. With this registration, it was successfully able to prevent the music festival from calling itself Tomorrowland when it launched in the USA. However, the music festival has the rights to the term in Belgium, the Netherlands and Luxembourg and has prevented Disney from using the name in these countries.” -Sharon Daboul, Trademark Attorney
