The last time we had a feature on um.., the duo from Southern California, it was to premiere their first ever original track titled “I Don’t Know.” To this day, I still don’t know what the f*ck these two are up to.
Enter their newest track, “Don’t Copy Us.” If the title were to serve as a warning or directive to any individual, I doubt that it would be hard to follow. The unique brand of music that comes from um.. is unlike anything I’ve heard before. It takes influences from jersey club, trap, dubstep and more, mixes in some natural samples and then finds the most absurd musical arrangement and plugs everything in like Legos.
“Don’t Copy Us” should have been titled, “Haha, You Can’t Copy Us.”
Between the jersey club bed squeaks and Middle Eastern string plucks, between the modulated synths and the arpeggiated chords, between the samples of cans opening and the absurd bassline, there’s this weird magnetism that lies at the heart of every um.. track, and I can’t even begin to explain it. Listen for yourself. I’m not sure why I like this and it’s driving me mad.
