High Noon Artist Pact, Week 2: Venom

Five music makers. One graphic designer. One challenge: to create a new & unique piece of artwork each week, for three months.

This is the High Noon Artist Pact, a crew of artists on a mission both to take their skills to the next level and to challenge the common pitfall of over-thinking what they create. Each week, a word of inspiration will be chosen to give the artists a loose idea of what to base their creation on. The rest is up to them. It’s a truly inspiring endeavor and we’ll be following each week of the challenge with anticipation. In case you missed our coverage of the first week (Flying), you can peep the playlist below to get acquainted with the High Noon artists. Read on to learn more and listen to this week’s tunes!

This week’s inspirational word was ‘venom’. As you might expect, this made for a motley collection of grimy, sludge-infused tracks. A theme we noticed was the use of bright, vibrant synths in combination with dark, gritty bass elements. A few of the artists also utilize short, stab-like notes to really push the erratic feeling of poison flowing through your system; think sonic snakebites. To top it all off, Molly Brooks‘ sinister yet enticing artwork lends a perfect visual representation of the week’s theme. Check out what the artists themselves had to say about their creations this week and get an earful of Venom!

When I initially thought of the word ‘venom’, my instant reaction was thinking of a snake – or snake bite. Both of those seemed pretty cliche and also did not want something similar to come from another one of the High Noon Artist Pact producers and have two of the same for the week. So I got to thinking about the snake bite itself, and what would occur and how to portray in a tune… I imagined one’s consciousness closing in, giving them: Tunnel Vision.

Venom…marvelous word. So common; therefore, visually telling. I couldn’t help but stretch it out and make it musical metaphor. The start of this track is a very small byte of a lyrical sample from Common and the metamorphosis of the track represents a venomous bite that sporadically flows through your body, with the abrupt shock of it wreaking havoc on your nervous system before completely overcoming you. So tread carefully, because she bytes.

Venom: I took away from this questions . What is the nature of venom? What are the effects of venom? What happens once ENVENOMATED? So, that’s where I went with it the effects on the mind and body once bitten , stung , or otherwise…

The beginning of the track made me think of the type of suspenseful synth stabs you would hear when something is inching towards it’s prey! Then when it dropped I just imagined the venom sinking in and taking full control. Puts the listener in a vegetative state.

This time was a bit unique because the idea actually came from my friend, Indaskyes. It went a little like this:

Indaskyes: The theme is Venom? Dude you should totally remix ‘Poison’ by Bell Biv Devoe!

Me: You’re an idiot and that is a terrible idea.

Our favorite tune was SoSay‘s ‘Nvenom8’. What was yours? Let us know in the comments!
