After his deep house remix of Azealia Banks’ “Chasing Time,” JayKode shows his versatility and originality as a producer with his debut Dark EP, released off of Tomsize & Simeon’s Unborn Records. The producer first established himself in the bass music scene in 2014 with remixes of tracks including Beyonce’s “Drunk in Love” and Galantis’ “Runaway (You & I),” which hit #1 overall on the HypeMachine charts. In his latest Dark EP, JayKode juxtaposes heavy, dark progressive bass with melodic chords and scales, capturing the essence of what he calls “classical bass.”
The EP first starts off with “Intro,” which shows his years of years of classical piano training through piano arpeggios that remind us of Wolfgang Gartner’s earlier works. “Intro” seamlessly flows into “Tension,” which balances the dark bass beats with Jaykode’s unmistakable style of melodic chords.
“I’m always trying to bring something completely fresh and new to the table. Being classically trained on the piano, I’d never want to let those skills to go to waste. I wanted “Dark” to be a seamless mix of trap and future sounds but most importantly have strong classical elements,” says the producer. “I’m trying to bring this new classical bass sound to the game and this is only the beginning of this concept.”
We certainly look forward to hearing more classical bass. In the meantime, hear the full EP below — it’ll be available for free download until it becomes available for purchase on Monday, February 9 off of Beatport or iTunes.
