We’ll be up front and say that we’ve been waiting a long time for this one. Ever since we first heard Fade to Grey, his collaborative release with WALA, Devin Kroes has been high on our list of Bay area beat hustlers. And now, after several stellar singles and compilation appearances, his debut EP is finally here.
Spanning five tracks of glitchy, psychedelic brilliance (including a bonus remix from Wu Wei), Through the Window is everything we hoped it would be: a saucy mix of familiar and unknown, of West coast bass and the world beyond. Devin definitely has his own particular groove when it comes to arranging music. Each and every track stands out in it’s own way, yet they all fit into the album’s overall flow perfectly. And let us just say, it’s quite a smooth flow indeed. Eastern string melodies mesh with tactile sub-bass and glittering synths to form rich, warm sonic textures that will massage your ears (and brain) from start to finish. Fans of Kalya Scintilla, Whitebear, and Govinda will definitely find themselves getting down to the sounds of Devin Kroes.
The Through the Window EP was released via Chillage Records and is available as a name-your-price download on the label’s Bandcamp. Check out the full stream of Devin Kroes’ debut EP after the jump and grab a copy if you’re feelin’ the vibes!
