Even though it’s a great site, one of the most annoying things about Beatport is playing a preview of a song that starts mid drop or only getting to hear 2 minutes of a 9 minute house song. In 2015 however, that’s all about to change.
SFX Entertainment has plans to launch a streaming service for Beatport that will not replace the current site and its functionality, but rather add onto it. As is the case with virtually every large music streaming service, there will be online ads but the streaming itself will be completely free and give users access to the entire Beatport catalog. This could be a big deal next year and it shows how important streaming is becoming as a medium for musical distribution and how quickly it is overtaking downloads.
By not changing their model completely toward streaming, Beatport will be in the position to become the “Spotify of EDM” while still maintaining a marketplace for DJs to purchase their music. A very exciting and new move by Beatport that could very well save them from the sinking ship that is digital downloads.
