Young dubstep talent The Frim has just put out an awesome track with Excision, ‘Night Shine.’ His weighty yet melodic brand of dubstep is surely going to keep him firmly in the spotlight as he continues to develop as an artist. We wanted to find out a bit more about what makes him tick…
‘Night Shine’ is a great piece of work, how did the three of you end up in the studio?
We were never all in the studio together. She sent the vocals to Excision as an abandoned idea that we were allowed to use, and we worked from there.
Is there a standout track from Excision that always gets your attention?
That would have to be Datsik – ‘Retreat’ (Excision Remix), a very big influence on me a few years ago.
What has been your best part of 2014 so far?
The past two years I would have said the Firepower tours I was on. But since I wasn’t on a tour this year, I don’t know what to say. There haven’t been any stand-out moments like those tours, but it’s all been good in general.
Do you have more releases on the way? If so, which is the one you’re most looking forward to getting out there?
I don’t have any planned right now, I have a decent collection of unreleased tracks but am always indecisive about what ones to put on an EP. I want to do an album eventually but it will be more about songs for home listening as opposed to club bangers. So I’m waiting for just the right moment to do that when it won’t anger the fans that much.
Would you prefer to play to thousands of people or a select one hundred at an intimate gig?
I don’t know, both are good for different reasons. Small gigs are good because of the intimacy with the crowd, you’re five feet away instead of thirty feet. But I’ve always wanted to play a massive festival gig to feel that energy (and of course get a nice ego boost out of the deal).
Where do you see your sound progressing over the next year or so?
Who knows? At the beginning of this year, I was planning on making different genres other than the usual style I had been doing for the past few years, and when I got the offer to do the Mean Machine remix I figured “OK… One last Bassline Skanka-ey tune… for old times sake.” But then while making it, I remembered how much I still love making that style, and then for the rest of the year I’ve kept doing that old style. It’s just too satisfying to make and listen to.
