I never really did that well in history in school. I was never very interested in Stonewall Jackson or Mao Zedong, or for that matter the French Revolution. But from the moment I discovered what electronic music meant to me, I developed a voracious appetite for historical knowledge. Finding Rusko led me to discover Skream and Benga and then Artwork, Plastician and Kode9. If these names mean nothing to you, then you might find yourself in the continually increasing sect of the population that finds themselves content with just skimming the surface. I couldn’t blame you. Finding consolidated information on dance music history is a tough feat and something that not everyone wants to take the time to do.
Thankfully, one of our friends over at EDM Sauce took the time to make this handy little infographic for us. It charts the various technological and societal benchmarks in electronic music for the past 50 years, since the 1960s. While the information is not completely comprehensive, and does not go into depth in any one area, it is a phenomenal starting point for learning about the history of electronic dance music.
