“Take Ü There,” Jack Ü’s debut single, stormed the world in 2014 and rang in a new style of production as only Skrillex and Diplo could. However, the story behind the track isn’t as simple as we’ve been led to believe. In a Genius annotation, Diplo has revealed that “Take Ü There” was originally produced for Usher.
“I do a lot of beats for Usher. We initially made it for him with a fast, up-tempo beat, and he did a little vocal on it…Then we recorded the song with Kiesza. We met her in Ibiza and I liked her show. She had a big hit at the time called ‘Hideaway’ and I loved her voice.”
And unbeknownst to us all this time, there are still shreds of Usher’s efforts gracing the record. “I actually think Usher’s voice is still in the beat somewhere—a high-pitched sound on the piano,” says Diplo. We can’t exactly fathom how the track would have sounded without Kiesza at the helm, but that’s not to say there isn’t an Usher and Jack Ü collab in the works. Back in June 2014, we saw an unlikely four-way studio session between Ed Sheeran, Usher, Diplo, and Skrillex, but no result. With the promise of another Jack Ü album in 2016, we might very well see the eclectic duo collaborate with the R&B superstar.
