David Thulin may not be a name or face you recognize, but is a talent that has touched
electronic music lovers worldwide. Thulin’s single Light in Me, which released in January
of this year, has recently been picked up by Air 1 and other radio stations nationwide,
becoming a radio hit. Thulin also has a weekly radio show, “The Reconstruction,” which is
broadcasted on over sixty radio stations nationwide. David’s brother, Jonathan Thulin, has
also gained radio popularity for his singles Dead Come to Life and Architecture, both of
which David Thulin has had the honor of remixing on his past two albums. 
Reconstruction 2.2 is the second half of Thulin’s sixth studio album and is expected to
release on September 30th, following his early 2013 release, Reconstruction. I had the
pleasure of interviewing Mr. Thulin about his music, life and faith.
You’re a big part of the recently growing “CEDM” scene. Can you give us some more
insight on this and the role you play in it?
The term “CEDM” (meaning Christian EDM) wasn’t something I thought would become a scene, but it is becoming that! I never tried to make it a scene, and I wasn’t the one to come up with the term. I personally just love EDM, specifically Trance and Progressive. I just happen to believe in God. I’ve been making Trance since 2002, and I suppose it was natural that the music I wrote was inspired by my faith. Many of my current remixes are of Christian recording artists, making the tracks Christian because of the lyrics, thereby classifying them as CEDM.
I don’t work exclusively with Christian music. My music is my art. It’s my life, quite literally. I produce full time and do my remixes on the side. My faith is just a piece of the story my music tells. I will say that it’s been a blast to open the eyes of the Christian music industry to EDM by bridging the gap with my remixes. I tried releasing some instrumental tracks a while back, but they never got any traction. Some of my remixes are really more Electronic Pop than pure EDM, but that’s what it took to start opening the doors to let EDM enter.
I’m certainly not the first to attempt breaking EDM into the Christian community. There are many pioneers before me, like Andy Hunter for example. I just happened to be at the right place and the right time to pick up some buzz. I got a record deal in 2011 and my music got distribution through Universal Music Group, so many Christian artists started catching on to me remixing their peers. Eventually I got to remix A-lister Christian artists like Natalie Grant, Francesca Battistelli, and Colton Dixon. Now I’ve become “the remixer,” which is funny to me because before my record deal I had never remixed anyone in my life! My goal is just to bridge the gap. I will continue to push for more underground sounds, extended mixes, and instrumental music. But it’s really one step at a time.
How do you think this new release differentiates from your previous efforts?
As a producer I feel like I’m always chasing my own tail and that nothing ever sounds as good as I want it to. I guess I’m very hard on myself… 2.2 is certainly my strongest release yet. I’m not just doing Trance/Progressive, but messing with DubStep, Electro, Glitch, influences of Drumstep, plus my usual trademark of Cinematic Orchestration.
I’m proud of it, but I’m more excited than ever to be working on new music and further developing my sound!

What’s your favorite song overall?
That’s hard. EDM? Film Score? I have different favorites in different genres haha.
Currently one of my favorite EDM tracks is “Here With You Now” by Grabbitz.
Who are your biggest inspirations as a producer? What songs (or artists) inspired you
to start producing?
I’ve played piano since I was 7, and was self taught. I idolized Swedish pianist Robert
Wells and would spend hours every day trying to mimic him. I was 15 when i first started writing/producing and it was very inspired by smooth jazz. That was my jam! In 2002, I totally fell in love with Trance and Euro Dance. Back then my inspirations were ATB, DJ Tiesto, Paul van Dyk, and basically the rest of the early Trance legends.
These days my biggest inspirations are a combination of Film Score composers and EDM producers. Guys like Harry GregsonWilliams, Jeremy Soule, Hans Zimmer, Alexandre Desplat, Zedd, Seven Lions, Dyro, Grabbitz, or whoever is on their game at the time just do it for me. I also listen to a lot of other genres too. I jam out to Dirty Loops, Imogen Heap, Ellie Goulding, M83, and so on. I listen to lots of music. Lots. Haha. Many times my inspirations to write EDM isn’t from other EDM writers/producers.
