For whatever reason, people like to wear Native American headdresses. I think it’s partly because (mostly American) people like to be involved in things that aren’t ours or that we don’t understand. Unfortunately, this scenario of “curiosity,” is not for the better. That is why Bass Coast Festival is banning the headwear from their event this year.
With the festival taking place on Native American grounds, it is the perfect opportunity to get people to understand why you shouldn’t dress up in holy attire. Because, in all reality, that’s what the headdresses are. Previously used for battle – hence the term “War Bonnet” – these now serve as items that are used in ceremonial practices. Sure, they look cool as hell (which, yes that’s the real reason people wear them). But, it’s quite insensitive to take a religious/spiritual item out of its proper setting for the sake of looking cool, especially if you are just seeking the eyes of others. Call me crazy, but I don’t think Jewish people would be fond of individuals running around at festivals wearing tallits.
This topic has made its rounds about the internet, even before Bass Coast decided to prohibit the feathered headdresses. I think from an American point of view, it’s hard to see why something so “little” as a hat can be so important to a group. “It’s just a hat,” you say. But to end this, there’s a meme that is highly appropriate. For those of you who choose to wear them, and disregard Native American culture, I say:

And, yet, people wear cross necklaces every day and still act like cunts. I guess this is overlooked though, and probably won’t be banned from festivals. Last time I checked it isnt the festivals responsibility to play fashion police or take spiritual/religious stance. Just focus on providing a safe environment for us to listen to music.
Extremely excited that this festival is respecting the people of the land . look forward to more festivals banning this.
the point of the article is that the war bonnet is a religious symbol and therefore should not be used as decoration of a person, BUT every year at other festivals I see guys wearing yamaca (sp) and nothing else, open pope robes and the pointy hat – and nothing else, the short black hassick (sp) jewish hats with the fake long curls at the sideburns, guys dressed like the mormon bicyclists, etc. etc. why choose only to ban one religous article? Because the festival is on Native American grounds? Aren’t all festivals in North America on Native American grounds?
What if you have Native ancestry and the headdress has been passed down for generations and the music is your sacrament? Despite the technology involved, the communion and sense of ethereal one-ness that presents itself reminds me of my connection with the Earth and the cosmos. Do I have to bring genealogical proof?
ever take into account they hated the slaughtering of native’s. so they want the holy attire to be brought back without the “war” definition put on it. Why are you assuming people are picking them up because they look cool? maybe some people do, but some also like it due to the fact it is holy & sacred! People are drawn to things that spark there intrests! & I would wear one to EDM due to the fact I believe in there culture & love holy/sacred things.
Its your opinion! Stop assuming people do things just for the sake of being cool/ looking good! Alot do it to represent! or because they have some belief in that area even if its small. Stop hating on people for wearing sacred and holy things, just because your thinking there not a believer! maybe they are slightly! I know I am 🙂 im a Believer + Dreamer <3
just design another cool hat with feathers and stuff..it wont be the traditional Native American Hat then..
i should bring a torah
who cares?
True hahaha
may be information and sensibilisation would be better than regulation again and again…
