It’s a great day for bassheads everywhere as Barely Alive is back in action, this time with a guest mix for the legendary Annie Nightingale on BBC Radio 1! Featuring a ton of incredible originals, remixes, and even a remake or two from the Massachusetts based duo, this mix is guaranteed to melt your face off just in time for the weekend.
My favorite part of the mix comes at 15 minutes and 10 seconds in, with the premiere of Barely Alive’s collab with Firepower Records mainstay The FRiM. The aptly title “Origins” sounds like a combination of “This Much Power (Untitled DJ Tool)” by Skrillex and “Bassline Skanka” by The FRiM. For those of you who don’t know, Skrillex has said that “Bassline Skanka” was the inspiration for “Untitled DJ Tool,” which subconsciously inspired Zomboy when he produced “Terror Squad,” which went on to inspire “All Is Fair In Love And Brostep,” the opening track of Skrillex’s first full length album “Recess.” Taking all of this dubstep “drama” into consideration, it’s pretty awesome to hear The FRiM’s take on the trend his track originally started, but with a little help from the boys of Barely Alive this time around; this version may very well be the best of the bunch!
Before I finish I just want to comment on how inspiring Barely Alive’s story is. When I first discovered their music back in September 2013 not that many people knew who they were and now they’re working with the biggest names in bass music such as Excision and Datsik and doing guest mixes for one of the most respected radio stations in the world. So let this be a lesson to all you aspiring wub-makers out there; dubstep isn’t dead, it’s Barely Alive!
