The American music landscape has grown up with Randy Newman on piano and in an interview with Rolling Stone he has revealed a desire to enter the EDM realm.
Is there any type of music you’d say you don’t have a feel for?
I actually don’t like those sort of mellow piano player types. That kind of mood music . . . I’d like to do an EDM record – get some Swedish guy, have him do 700 dates ‘til he breaks, then get another one. I could write it. I think I could. Some of that’s kind of irresistible.
Most readers will know Randy Newman from being spoofed on Family Guy, South Park, or Mad TV, but in a lengthy career, the piano rock legend has accumulated a staggering amount of awards (he is one Tony short of the coveted EGOT) and has written film scores for Meet the Parents, Toy Storys 1, 2 & 3, and Monster’s Inc, to name a few.
What do you think of the aging rocker’s comments? Is this just the naivety of an old man that is unfamiliar with contemporary synthesis or would his old school ways revolutionize the EDM playing field? And who should Randy Newman solicit to be his disposable “some Swedish guy?” Let us know in the comments.
