After a brief hiatus from writing, I’m grateful to be returning to Your EDM‘s Sunrise Sessions in order to showcase the deeper and sophisticated sounds of dance music. This week, I decided to pick an extra special forthcoming release from two promising talents in Deep Progressive and Deep House that contain a beautifully rich and detailed sound design. As one of Dutch’s rising Progressive House talents, Rogier de Breuk has elevated his Rodg alias towards the international scene with consistent support by some of the biggest names in Trance and Progressive Trance. He is quickly becoming a regular favorite of Ruben de Ronde and Statement! Recordings, as his previous singles of Is Anyone Out There and Didn’t Get Caught has been surprisingly prominent in quality and production. For those of you who may not know of RNX, it’s actually the deeper alias of the highly accredited Trance producer, Robert Nickson, whose extensive discography has earned him a rightful place in A State Of Trance‘s back catalog. He has sharpened his teeth over the years and has grown into a ruthless technician, working alongside other exalted Trance legends such as Daniel Kandi and Thomas Datt. Now, with the precision based design on RNX and the wonderfully flowing themes of Rodg, their brilliant collaboration of Moonman combines the best of both worlds into a wonderful mesh of captivating aural melodies.
First heard in Armin van Buuren‘s warm up set for the Moscow leg of the ASOT 650 celebrations, Moonman is aggressively multifaceted within a tricky mold of Deep Progressive constructs. Neither Tech, nor Progressive, nor Techno; it’s instead situated in a strange overlap between the three that exudes a mysterious presence over its graceful motifs. RNX‘s intriguing sixteenth note basslines, glitchy, water-laden sound textures and edgy percussion section certainly envelops the melody into a definitive Prog Tech design, but the instances of swirling pads, classic House piano stabs, and winding synth bends of Rodg softens its identity to a point where the obvious clash of mindsets smoothly coalesce into something unique and original. Even in the breakdown, the symbiosis of styles becomes apparent in Rodg‘s breathtaking ambiance and RNX‘s storming synth rhythms. And yet, instead of fighting for supremacy, they play off of each others differences to elevate its special charm to even greater heights. From subtle space shuttle countdowns, to the incredible amount of colors that are implemented, each and every phrase brings something new and delightful to the table that feels like a splash of cool water over the face. The effects of Moonman both calms and exhilarates the aural palette to a never ending supply of musical wonder that is rarely matched with today’s current artists.
